Abstract
Shyness is defined as the presence of inhibition and discomfort in social situations. Shyness is a negative and disruptive emotional experience that includes feelings of self-condemnation and the desire to hide one's hurt from others. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between self-criticism, social interaction anxiety, and fear of failure with shyness in students. 82 men and 100 women (total 182 people) were selected from students living in student dormitories of Shahid Chamran University using stratified random sampling. Data were collected through social anxiety, self-criticism, and fear of failure scales of shyness and analyzed by simple correlation coefficient and multiple regression. The findings showed that: the internal consistency of the above-mentioned scales was all satisfactory. A significant positive relationship was observed between the variables of self-criticism, social anxiety, and fear of failure with shyness. And the results of multivariate regression analysis showed that the variables of self-criticism and social anxiety contribute to predicting the variance of the criterion variable (shyness) and not the variable of fear of failure. As a result, it can be stated that people's criticism of themselves and the anxiety they show in social situations cause shyness.
