Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impairments in patterns of family communication and family functions in adolescents with Bipolar mood Disorder (BD).

Method: The Method of the present study was descriptive with a two group comparative causal method. The statistical population included all adolescents with Bipolar Disorder. 52 hospitalized adolescents whit BD in EbneSina psychiatry hospital were selected through convenience sampling. 52 healthy volunteers were considered in order to compare Data. Data were collected through the two questionnaires of Family Communication Patterns (FCP) and Family Assessment Device (FDA). In order to analyze data, Multivariate analysis of variance was used. All the data analysis process was done using "SPSS 26" statistical software.

Findings: The results showed that there are significant differences between two groups of Adolescents (with bipolar disorder and healthy) in the components of Family functions questionnaire (problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, behavior control and general function) and the components of family Communication patterns questionnaire (Conversational Orientation and Conformity orientation) (P<0/001). The presence of impairments in family functions in adolescents with BD should be considered as an important factor in treatments and interventions.
