Self-destructive Behaviors and psychosocial correlates among Students of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad

Abstract

The aims of thisdescriptive/survey study was to determine the prevalence of self-destructive behaviors and psychosocial correlates among students of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. The data were collected from 873 (approximately 5 percent of total statistical population) students, including 586 female and 287 male students. The participants were given researcher-made questionnaire, “assessment of self-destructive behavior and its psychosocial correlates”.Analysis variance, Mann-Withney U,Kruskal-Wallisand t-test were employed to explore the prevalence of self-destructive behaviors of students along with age, gender, marital status, location of residency and educational degree. The result of study reveal that lack of exercise, much sleeping, high level of stress, Hypo-alimentation, less recreation, healthy fun activities and absence of hobbies, have high level of incidence in students. In contrast drugs addiction, stealing, fancy use of drugs, running away and homosexuality behavior havelow level of frequencyin students. Gender differs in self-destructive behavior, which male students in 22-26 shows higher level of self-destructive. Furthermore, the most important reasons of self-destructive behaviors prevalence among students were related to family problems, psychological-emotional causes and social problems, and the least important were respectively occupational causes, occupational situation as well as political grounds
